Tyler went to high school here locally in Jacksonville and has called this area home for over twenty years. He attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville as an undergraduate earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Following college graduation, attended law school at Florida Coastal where he focused his studies on criminal law. During law school, he pursued opportunities to intern with the State Attorney’s Office in Clay County as well as the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District in downtown Jacksonville. After those experiences, he was positive he wanted to be in a courtroom fighting for the rights of the accused. Since his graduation from law school and his immediate acceptance to the Florida Bar, he has spent his entire legal career defending those accused or charged with criminal offenses in the State of Florida.

In order to gain invaluable trial experience, he spent two years working at the Public Defender’s Office and then a year and half at the Office of Regional Conflict Counsel’s Office. During those three and a half years, he represented those accused of misdemeanors and felonies having tried over thirty trials to verdict. Despite the heavy caseloads, he placed individualized attention and detailed review to each client’s case.

In April of 2013, Tyler had the opportunity to go work with Travis Reinhold, a well-known and highly respected criminal defense solo practitioner. That experience made him a stronger and more well-rounded lawyer. After several years working closely together as team, Reinhold & Gates Law Firm was launched in 2020. During the last three years as law partners, our firm helped countless clients and their families deal with the challenges of the COVID pandemic and the strain that put on the legal system. Anxious for a new challenge, Tyler opened Gates Law Firm in November of 2022.

He is active in many professional organizations including the Northeast Florida Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (NEFACDL) and the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (FACDL). When out of the office, he enjoys spending time with his family either boating or riding around Jacksonville Beach in the golf cart.
